The explosively growing number smart phone connection subscribers in India has posed a serious problem before the department of Telecom (DoT). The number of smart phone individuals in the country has recently touched the figure of 992.81 million. As a result, all the phone numbers series currently in utilize are expected to cross the one billion mark. The 10 digit smart phone numbers will exhaust their capacity. dot is now seeking for the solution in 11 digit numbers as well as some other alternatives. Rajan Mathews, director general of Cellular operators association of India, shows his concern in the matter as follows:
There may be a serious issue if a new series of numbers are not brought in by the middle of next year. We are theoretically reaching the limit of existing number sets with a customer base of one billion. DoT stated that it may requirement remapping of networks and there may be problems conforming to worldwide numbering requirements too. dot hasn’t rejected the concept totally however is looking into alternatives.
Today gadgets ranging from vehicles to tablets depend upon SIM cards for network connectivity. This new demand has further added to the number of phone number subscribers in the country.
