Sony has now sold much more than 10 million PS5 consoles, according to a new report. That’s a significant increase on the 7.8 million consoles that were touted back in April.
Perhaps much more importantly, it also implies that the PS5 continues to out-pace the sales of the PS4 and, in turn, becomes the fastest-selling console that Sony has ever made.
That’s a fact that’s made all the much more amazing considering the problems that people have had trying to actually purchase these things. Stocks have been practically nonexistent because launch and while things have begun to work out down a tad, your chances of walking into a store and purchasing a PS5 are still pretty slim.
Sony Interactive home entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told The Verge that the company continues to work to fix supply issues.
The PS5 may be selling well, but supply is constrained and it’s still challenging to purchase a console best now thanks to a global chip shortage. “While PS5 has reached much more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” says Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “I want gamers to know that while we continue to face distinct challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and numerous others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE.”
By comparison, Microsoft hasn’t told anybody how numerous Xbox series S and series X consoles it has sold. That being said, Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst at Niko Partner, thinks the total was around 6.5 million as of June 30.
